January is Cervical Health Awareness Month

By Samantha Zamfir and Selena Pemberton - Macaroni KID Cape Coral December 31, 2024

Cervical cancer is 100% preventable, yet it is still one of the leading causes of death in women. It is know as the “silent killer” as there are no extreme side effects or signs. I personally have had my scare with cervical cancer and is checked regularly by my OBGYN.

Some signs can include irregular bleeding, pelvic pain not associated with your menstruation, vaginal discharge, and discomfort with intercourse.

Your cervix is a soft tissue structure located on the inner most end of your vagina. It is the doorway from your vagina to your uterus. Your cervix is important: aids in getting pregnant, supporting your baby while pregnant, dilates and thins during child birth, and also is involved in your monthly menstruation. It’s as small as a bottle cap and holds much value in your role as a woman.

Early detection is key. Your gynecologist will perform a Papsmear test to identify the cells on your cervix. Starting at the age of 21, women should get a pap smear every three years for early detection. In cervixal cancer, the cells on your cervix over-grow and can travel to other parts of your body if not treated early. Once it travels, it’s harder to treat.

Anyone who has a cervix, which includes all women, need to be assessed. HPV is leading cause of cervical cancer and unfortunately, many of us have it from sexual activity. Make sure you talk to your doctor about your options and ensure you are getting checked every three years. There is also a vaccine option for HPV. I just received my vaccine after my cervical cancer scare and it was very easy. You receive the vaccine in three separate appointments. Your arm may be sore afterwards, but nothing to concerning.
